I've been noticing the resurgence of fairy tale remakes of late--Beast and Little Red Riding Hood are both roaring into theaters soon (bad pun unavoidable--sorry!), and it got me thinking about other fairy tales I knew and loved as a kid. Maybe some of them are even ripe for a redux?
Unsurprisingly, maybe, since I was a serious dancer into my teens, my favorite fairy tales involved dancing, like the Red Shoes (about a girl who is forced to dance herself to death--or, in one version, cut off her own feet so she DOESN'T dance herself to death) and a Grimm's story whose name I've forgotten, which features twelve princesses who descend every night into a subterranean world to attend a ball, and end up dancing off the soles of their shoes--literally. (I'm pretty sure my shoe obsession grew out of this story. I was just as enthralled by the idea of daily shoe replacements as I was by nighly dancing.)
What about you guys? What are some of your favorite fairy tales? Which ones would you like to see updated and reloaded?

I have justed finished reading a fantastic fairy tale retelling of The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Anderson. It is called The Swan Kingdom by Zoe Marriott. It is utterly awesom.
Would love to see Rose Red and Snow White retold (not Snow White and the Seven Dwarves)
You actually named my personal favorite- Twelve Dancing Princesses. Jessica Day George did a marvelous historical fiction adaptation of it in Princess of the Midnight Ball, but the idea of seeing a modern take on it rather fascinates me. There are just so many ways it could be explored, right down to the decision of whether to make the dozen actual sisters or sisters of a more figurative sort.
Another I'd love to see is a modern take on the original story of Swan Lake. I can't remember the actual name of the story, but the ballet, Swan Princess, and Mercedes Lackey's Black Swan are all based off of it, and a comtemporary version could be absolutely amazing.

I absolutely love The Snow Queen and would love to see a teenage version of this adapted. Cinderella of course has already been done in one of my favourite films, EVER AFTER. And Peter Pan <3. Beauty and The Beast is one of my favourite fairytales and this has been done over and over. It would be interesting to see a film version of The Little Mermaid (sans musical numbers) or perhaps The Princess and the Pea?

I agree with Dasye, sleeping beauty is one of my favorite fairytale, the girl who is both beautiful and captivating is trapped in a spell unitl her prince charming comes to wake her up with a kiss. Its so romantic. A cool romantic modern day twist to this would be great. Sleeping Beauty should be updated!!!
I did a little research before answering. I love to read/see good adaptations of fairy tales, and I wanted to suggest something that hadn't been seen before. I like the one about the Twelve Dancing Princesses, especially now that I've gone back and read it.

Actually it's funny you mention it because that is what I decided to do with my latest novel. It is a Sleeping Beauty remake, which was my favorite Disney cartoon as a child. I don't see many remakes of that, so I'm hoping it isn't overdone when I finally finish =). But thanks to Dayse, I now have another idea of rising tention. Can't believe I forgot about the entire kingdom falling asleep AND it just so happens that my book is placed in NYC (is that giving away too much?)

I hated normal fairy tales when I was younger - I got the real Grimm tales, German stories and such, so when I did start watching the Disney movies, I really hated them. I like Greek myths - Persephone is still one of my favourites, same with Orpheus. Francesca Lia Block's Psyche In A Dress is a great story. Also, Rick Riodan's books.
There was a Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses Movie a couple years ago that I watch several times with my younger siblings. It wasn't that atrocious.
Little Mermaid. Nearly impossible to modernize, but it's my favorite. :)

That one about the dancing until she dies sounds creeptastic! Def looking into that one.
I'm so pumped for the Red Riding Hood reboot that I can't see past it to think of another I would like to see. I am loving how the remakes are airing on the Grimm side though. Dark & sexy all the way.
I think the Twelve Dancing Princesses has just been done (sure I read a review last week but can't remember the name). I do love that story though. I also love Beauty and the Beast but I suppose that's been overdone already. What about Rapunzel or Rumplestiltskin (is that spelt correctly?)
Entwined is the book that is based on The 12 Dancing Princesses. It's very good, due for release at the end of this month.
The Twelve Dancing Princesses was always one of my favorites, too. Jessica Day George has a fantastic version and I'm really excited for the release of Heather Dixon's Entwined later this month, also revolving around this tale.
Recently, I've been reading the series by Jim C. Hines. He takes obscure versions of the tales we know and features them in his books. For example, in the first book, The Stepsister Scheme, the stepsister was an assassin out to kill Cinderella. I never knew that! I also enjoy two other adult fairytale series, Tales of the 500 Kingdoms by Mercedes Lackey, and various books by Juliet Marillier (Heart's Blood, based on Beauty and the Beast, is my favorite...and one of my favorite fairytale novels).
One of my friends, Marissa Meyer, has a quartet for teens coming out next year. Cinder is her first novel and I'm so excited for her!
I hope this fairytale trend goes on forever ^_^ It and the Dystopian trend (of which Delirium is one of my favorites) are my two favorite genres.
I love a good classic like Sleeping Beauty...I think that if well thought out, that could turn into something, not cheesy at all!
