Dear Bully

Last year, I was given the opportunity to contribute to an anthology about a difficult and all-too-topical subject: bullying. The anthology, edited by Megan Kelley Hall and Carrie Jones, comprises stories, memories, and essays submitted by a vast array of celebrated teen authors, including Aprilynne Pike, Carrie Ryan, Jon Scieszka, Mo Willems, Alyson Noel, Ellen Hopkins, Carolyn Mackler, and Lauren Kate.

Bullying--and the topic of meanness/cruelty more generally--is an important theme in my first book, Before I Fall, and I was honored to have the opportunity to address it from a nonfiction standpoint in Dear Bully.

The book has now been released, and I am giving away a copy! Simply respond to this post and you will be entered for a chance to win a signed finished copy. For the rest of you, PLEASE don't neglect this book. (You can find the USA today review of Dear Bully here, and check out the book's Goodreads page here for more info.) A portion of the proceeds go to an anti-bullying organization, so this book is a worthwhile purchase any way you slice it.

I think this is a really good idea for a book. I would love to win a copy and plan on putting in on to TBR list even if I don't win.

Can I just say that I LOVE how so many YA authors are coming together to address bullying? It's especially wonderful to see people admit to being bullies and owning up to what they did, because as a society, we can't move forward without accepting our mistakes. Thank you for everything that you do.

(I'm throwing my hat into the ring for a copy of this book, but I solemnly swear to pass it on to other readers. angelidgcruz at gmail dot com)

Wow! This sounds amazing. I think its so important to share experiences like these with others, especially teens. High school is hard enough without all the bullying that goes on. Thanks for being a part of this anthology and for the giveaway.

The concept of this book is very timely. I'm curious to see how each of the writers responded to bullying through short stories.

I really want to read this book! I just think it's a great way for authors to get bullying and how bad it is a lot more light. People just don't think that they can get bullied or that bullying isn't important.

This was simply interesting, until I read that it was nonfiction. now it's important and necessary as a read.

Like the commented before me said, the fact that it's nonfiction has tripled the interest! I hope I get a chance to read this whether or not I win.

Thank you very much for highlighting this book, I downloaded it immediately after reading your post and from what I've read of it so far it truly is an amazing anthology. What a brilliant idea! As I was reading I started to think about how many people will probably be inspired to write about their experiences because of this book, which is great, but wouldn't it be fantastic if everyone's writings could be displayed somewhere, like on a blog?
Basically, I would like to set up a blog which everyone can send their writings to, in a similar style to Dear Bully, but without some kind of publicity it wouldn't be very effective. Do you think this is something that could work? I would appreciate any thoughts on this idea - sarah.katem@yahoo.com
Thank you.

I can't say that I've been "bullied" much in particular. However, occasionally whenever my dead beat ghost of a dad/good for nothing sperm donor decides to show up in my life over Facebook or phone call-He definitely finds a way to hit me where it hurts. I think I'll probably try to pick up this book, seeing as looking at pain through others perspectives may help me find a way to deal with my own family fueled stress. lol Not that I'm an angry/sad person-I'm always looking on the brightside :) Thanks for putting books like this together. This is why I love stories.
