The Big Beach Reads Bash

There's nothing better than curling up under a blanket, in front of a fire, with a good book...unless it's stretching out on a picnic blanket or a beach towel, in a bikini, with a good book! Certain books, it seems, were made to be read in summertime...just like watermelon was made to be eaten outside, on a lawn, and burgers taste better at a friend's fourth of July bbq than they do at any four-star restaurant.

So here's my question to you: what are your favorite summer reads of all time? And what books are you looking forward to reading THIS summer? And what is so special about summer reading?

Everyone who comments will be automatically entered to receive a lucky prize pack of fabulous beach reads--all selected from among the answers YOU provide! That's called symbiosis, my friends.

So come on and share!

(Contest runs through June 30th).

Best beach read ever -- Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. I've read it three times, last time was in Cabo on a girls weekend. I sat by the infinity pool all day in the sun and read, read, read.

Books I'll be taking with me on our 4th of July trip to Bar Harbor: Insatiable by Meg Cabot, Anthony Bourdain's new book, and *cough cough ahem please?* an arc of Delirium :)

I really don't know, because to me, anytime is time to read! But the best summer reads? Oh, Gosh! I don't know... I'm planning to read Dear John, Torment, Before I Fall, and Crescendo 'till this summer. OH! And one of the best reads that i already had, was Pride and Prejudice. LOVE this book! :D

PS: Sorry, I forgot that in the US is summer now. Here in my country is winter, and it's so cold! But actually, I enjoy it! :)

I can't wait for Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins! (Team Gale, woo!) Also, Faithful Place by Tana French and The Burning Wire by Jeffrey Deaver are high on my list.

Actually my fave summer reads have always been Harry Potter books because I first read them in the summer and they always came out in the summer so I associate them with heat and good times. But right now I'm totally digging Mari Mancusi's Boys That Bite vampire books, they are like candy--perfect for the beach. And Im also looking forward to reading Meg Cabot's new book. Reading Delirium this summer would rock my socks off!

My favorite summer reads of all time are the Twilight books. I find myself reading them every summer. The books I am looking forward to reading this summer are Linger by Maggie Stiefvater, Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, and Dark Flame by Alyson Noel. I am also looking forward to reading a bunch of books that are in my TBR pile at the moment. The fact that I have more time to read is what makes summer reading so special. I read so many more books during the summer!

I like to read light and fun books for beach reads. I'm reading PLUS by Veronica Chambers right now, and it's seems to be a great beach read. It's also fun to read books with beach themes in the summer. Mermaid Park by Beth Mayall had a fun beach setting.

Lol. I do not really remember all the books I have read in the summers so far... I only remember a few, like... Twilight saga. Gosh. Nothing comes to my mind right, now :( I hope and plan to read A LOT of books, because I need to. They are some of Tess Gerritsen's (Rizzoli and Isles series), Spirit Bound, Dark Flame, Sea, The Red Pyramid, Rampant, etc. Although, there oned I already have here on my shelf. What I am actually looking forward to read this summer (if I had it on my hands) are Torment, Crescendo, Delirium, Shadow Hills, The Replacement, Nightshade, Siren, Forbidden Sea... So many. And, I mean, in Brazil it's definitely NOT summer, it's kind of winter. LOL. The opposite, right? So, I stay at home and pass all my vacation (only July) reading and going to the movies. It's AMAZING!

I'd like to say The Reef by Nora Roberts but it's not quite YA - it's more romantic fiction but I love the fact that it's set in a hot place with boats and hideen treasure. Throw in some romance for good measure! :)

Cool contest Lauren :)

My favorite summer time book is "Tan Lines" by J.J. Salem. It's not YA but it's a great read, and who doesn't want to read a book called "Tan Lines" while working on their tan?

I usually re read my Potter books every summer but other than that I don't have any specific books I read during the summer.

Manda said...

For me, it was Twilight. I read it in one perfectly long beach day in Ocean City, MD. But I also save most of my chick lit for summer pool/beach reading. Current faves are The Carrie Diaries, Celebutantes, Summer Sisters, The Last Summer (Of You and Me), and The Luxe series. All fabulous.

Yan said...

I like more romance in my summer so something like THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE is a guilty read combined with literary talent.

Susan @ The Book Bag said...

I plan to listen to all of the Harry Potter books this summer, not actually while lying on the beach but while getting some walking in. Good books and good exercise! And I plan to re-read The Time Traveler's Wife (loved it!) and I will be re-reading Before I Fall (after I get it back from all my friends that are reading it!)

So many books, so little time!

Kate E. said...

I always read the Harry Potter Series in the summer- but this summer I am looking forward to reading Mockingjay!

I think the shopaholic series are good books to read over the summer. I'm a teacher and usually after I get home from work after a long day of "sit down in your seat, put those scissors away, lets get back to work and leave joe alone" I feel I am mentally exhausted. Now that it is summer I have all the time I need to catch up on my readings. I just finished reading Caught by Harlan Coben and boy was it a page turner!!! I am currently reading Shopaholic and sister and loving it, can't stop laughing. I plan on reading the new Stephenie Meyer novel, Cum Laude by Cecily von Ziegesar, and The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell. The best part about summer, no interruptions, reading at my own pace and of course- no more excuses (on my part)!!!

Lena1xoxo said...

Best beach read, IMO, is Along For the Ride by Sarah Dessen. Tis good!

What am I looking forward to this summer...Linger by Maggie Stiefvater, Keys to the Repository by Melissa De La Cruz, Kiss Me Deathly antho, Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink and The Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

Lastly, what is so special about summer reading. Summmer = break. It's your chance to escape from the harsh demands of real life. And what better way to escape then to step into a whole other world. Thus, summer reading at it's finest! :D

iffath said...

Looking forward to Crescendo, Torment, Mockingjay, Sea and so many more! I've just finished The Summer I Turned Pretty which was amazing, so I'm hoping to reread that :)

I'll never forget the summer I read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by the pool in the Bahamas, on my honeymoon.

I'm looking forward to Mockingjay, of course, Beautiful Darkness, Torment, Clockwork Angel, and... Delirium!

I think summer reading is special because it's so great to be on vacation and have nothing to worry about except fun in the sun and the fictional world you're reading about.

I love summer reading as much as I do getting cozy with a blanket in front of our fireplace during the winter. Hmmm...anything with romance. Yeah, I'm a sucker. Pride and Prejudice is my all-time, neverending, for-all-weather read. Currently, I'm excited about finishing Radiant Shadows and We Hear the Dead.

Favorite summer reads: Along For the Ride, Stealing Heaven, and Princess Diaries :) I'm looking forward to reading a lot of my summer-release ARCs like Stalker Girl and The Eternal Ones. Reading in the summer is just overall more fun and less stressful, there's a lot more time to just lounge around & read!

my all time favorite summer reads are "Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin, "The Truth about Forever" by Sarah Dessen, and "Undomestic Goddess" by Sophie Kinsella. I'm looking forward to reading "Anthropology of an American Girl!" I just ordered it and i'm anxiously awaiting. I also have a pile of books waiting to be read which include but are not limited to "Wedding Girl" by Madelene Wickham (SOPHIE KINSELLA IS A MUST!!), "Thirteen reasons why" by Jay Asher, "Along for the Ride" by Sarah Dessen, "The Last Summer of You and Me" by Ann Brashares, "True Colors" by Kristin Hannah and "The Alchemist" by Michael Scott. I also want to reread a bunch of other books that i love. I have a lot of reading to do this summer and i couldn't be MORE EXCITED!! Summer reads are my favorite. They allow me to just sit and relax and live vicariously through another person if only for a moment and have some fun while basking in the sun.

p.s. - i'm also looking to see if i can make some friends in the publishing industry and take a peek at your new book, delirium! =) i can't wait!!!

I love reading by the beach! Some of my favorite summer reads are: Summer in the City by Elizabeth Chandler, Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols, Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta, Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles, Graceling by Kristin Cashore and The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. :) I wonder why all of these are love stories.

Last summer, two of the best things I read were the Percy Jackson series (Rick Riordan) and reread the Traveling Pants series (Ann Brashares). Both series had a lot of plot, but weren't difficult to read - which is what summer reading is all about. Summer books should be fun and entertaining, but should still let you relax!
This summer, I'm looking forward to Linger (Maggie Stiefvater), The Red Pyramid (Rick Riordan), and putting a dent in my ever growing TBR pile!

I like to read beachy romance books in the summer, like Along for the Ride, Keeping the Moon, and others by Sarah Dessen. I also liked Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin, When it Happens by Susane Colasanti, and Geek Magnet by Kieran Scott. (These are all books I read last summer). This summer I'm looking forward to reading the Sarah Dessen books that I haven't read yet (Dreamland and This Lullaby), The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson, Just One Wish by Janette Rallison, and Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison. So excited! (:

This summer I am looking forward to be reading "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeline L'eengle. I'm also looking forward to reading God's Of Manhattan by Scott Mebus. Reading a Wrinkle in Time has always been a traditional read for me every summer. The reason is because it was a book that always made a person's questions about the world even more engaging and possibly even more possible to be solved. It was a good read to make you think our world isnt all that's left in your life.. Theres much much more. Kinda of like Before I Fall. Gods of Manhattan sounds like a good read this summer, because it is a novel that has to do with a parallel world that exists aside from Manhattan, New York, called Mannahata. Mannahata is a world where all historical figures that have died in the past regain a new life in this new world. Then one day a mortal kid discovers this world, and finds warriors in central park, paper mache kids along with a magaician who is responsible for this boy seeing this world.

I love reading romantic and/or funny stories in the summer. Something about them just goes with the sun...Sophie Kinsella and Lisa Lutz have written some great summer reads. Right now, I'm reading Insatiable by Meg Cabot and wishing that the sequel was being released this summer as well. I'm also looking forward to reading Forget You by Jennifer Echols since I LOVED Going Too Far.

Ooh perfect question because, living in sunny soCal, I plan to hit up the beaches nonstop this summer! Although just because it's the beach doesn't mean that I'm required to read light chick lit; rather I'm thinking to go with high fantasy and dystopias and sci-fi and mysteries instead :) That said, I'm extremely looking forward reading:

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Patrick Ness)
A Feast for Crows (George R.R. Martin)
Mockingjay (Suzanne Collins)
The Way of Kings (Brandon Sanderson)
The Clockwork Angel (Cassandra Clare)
Dani Noir (Nova Ren Suma)
Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card)
Perchance to Dream (Lisa Mantchev)
and a lot of Agatha Christies!

I'm kinda crazy...I can imagine myself seriously reading epic fantasy on the beach LOL :)

My all-time fave summer read is Judy Blume's SUMMER SISTERS. Six summers of an explosive friendship. Love it!

This summer will be winter for me... and I'm looking forward to reading Matched by Ally Condie, BD by Kami Garcia and Margie Stohl, Paranormalcy by Kiersten White and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, among others. I'm also reading the VA Series, and I want to finish it this "summer".

I guess I'm plain weird, but I don't like reading at the beach. First, because the heat makes me sleepy, and second, because it's really annoying to keep turning the book so that the reflected sun doesn't hurt your eyes.

But anyway, if I were to choose... it would pick one of the few upcoming books by Lauren Barnholdt. Witty, funny, and coming especially for the summer! (will they include some sunscreen? hum, gotta check...)

Ah summer reading-I've been making the stack/list for months...I just finished your before i fall advanced review copy (loved it!), and look forward to going on to Keeper by Kathi Appelt, Lies-A Gone Novel by Michael Grant, The Dancing Pancake, Necromancer, Magnificent 12, Mockingjay, and many more!

My favorite summer read of all time is Harry Potter. I have so many memories of reading that book everywhere- in my house on a hot day in the AC, at the pool, at the beach. I remember once summer staying at the boardwalk all night waiting for the book to come out!

My favorite summer read is anything by Sophie Kinsella. Her books are light and fun and hilarious. There's something about the summer that sets the mood for exactly this kind of read!

Hannah S. said...

Does our answer actually have to be, like, beachy? :)

I love reading the cute, summery books such as Melissa Walker's Lovestruck Summer (an adorable read for anyone interested!), but I really need to catch up on my reading. Really, REALLY, badly!

I have this humongous, gigantic (totally double-dipped right there), mountain looking thing in my room, which always manages to make me feel either (1) super happy (2) completely wishing I was an absolute genius and, therefore, not needing to study for my stupid finals or (3) completely behind.
Most of the titles fall under the paranormal genre, but I'll be reading them all summer! Not exactly "beachy", but awesome books nevertheless! :)
Have a wonderful Wednesday night!

Love, Hannah S.

This summer I can't wait to read Linger, Mockingjay, Sea, and It's Not Summer Without You, Crescendo, Matched, Insatiable, and Rules of Attraction.

Other favorites I have read in the summery months are Sea Change, Audrey, Wait!, Changeless, Shade, Spirit Bound, Twenty Boy Summer.

I love the long days in the summer and relaxing and curling up with a book by the pool or at the beach. My daughter is home from school and we can take turns reading books and having a mother daughter book club.

Have a great summer!

Cass said...

Hmm, well I haven't really ever taken a book to the pool/beach, because I usually like to go for a swim. :P Also, this summer I didn't read anything. (It's Winter now here in Australia- if international isn't allowed, I have a friend in America who can receive the prize for me. :P)

However, some titles that come across as perfect for summer are: Sea by Heidi R. Kling, Twenty Boys Summer, It's not Summer Without You, anything by Sarah Dessen...Actually, I'd say most YA, because YA is great for all occasions and seasons. 8)

I particularly love The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen, The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han and Does My Head Look Big In This by Randa Abdel-Fattah. Not forgetting of course any of the Harry Potter series which I LOVED (and still do) while growing up and Before I Fall which i also LOVE :D.
This summer I can't wait for Shadowland by Alyson Noel, Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare, North Of Beautiful, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, Scarred by Julia Hoban, You by Charles Benoit...and I think I'll stop listing my summer reads now as it is getting a bit too extensive and I should probably be getting my exam revision done ;)

My favorite summer reads always include the beach. (Well most of the time.) I think that there is something so magical about being at the beach, even in a book.
I really liked 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' by Jenny Han and I really look forward to reading her second book this summer. Some other summer favorites would be Sarah Dessen's 'Along for the Ride', 'The Last Song' by Nicholas Sparks, Simone Elkele's books, and I have been loving all of the new ya books that were released this year, including 'Before I Fall!'

Now for what I'm looking forward to the most: 'Bright Young Things' by Anna Godbersen. I won a sample copy of her new book, but it was only the first 80 pages, and I honestly don't know how I am going to have the patience to wait! I just loved all of the characters already! Definitely at the top of my TBR list! :)
Thanks for the giveaway! You are such a talented author, and with such a great debut, you should be very proud of yourself! :)

Some of my best summer reads were Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, Beaches and the sequel I'll Be There. I also loved The Shack, and anything by John Grisham. There are so many others but I'll leave it at that. This summer I want to read Before I Fall of course, Shade, The Tension of Opposites, Stolen, Crescendo, Girl in Translation, The Lotus Eaters, Petals From the Sky, The Hunger Games Series, The Millenium Series, etc. What I love about summer reading is the ability to read with "no interruptions!!!" No school or homework distractions during the time you are reading a book in the summer and no limitations to the amount of time you can spare to read your favorite summer books. Thanks.

I'm dying to read "Insatiable" by Meg Cabot, "Before I Fall" by Lauren Oliver (heard of her? ;P), "Brightly Woven" by Alexandra Bracken, "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" by John Green and David Levithan... oh, the list continues.

Definite summer read favourites include: "Remember Me?" by Sophie Kinsella, "The Innocent Mage" by Karen Miller, "Book Thief" by Markus Zusak, "Stephanie Plum series" by Janet Evanovich. And speaking of the latter, I can't wait to get my hands on "Full Tilt" to see how Max Holt, the out-of-control genius how used to blow things up grew up :D
